In accordance with the much anticipated Spotify wrapped launch, which infiltrated our screens as 2024 comes to a close, I think it’s time I give you: Runway Wrapped 2024, my pièce de résistance of designer collections this year: Sandy Liang’s RTW Spring 2024 look-book.
Liang’s collection is a tour de force of pumps, satin and bows galore which captures the aesthetics of ballet in the colourful language of girlhood and nostalgia. Each look is effortlessly feminine and delicately assembled.
Our high-street faves, like Zara and Mango have pursued the indefatigable spirit of Liang’s ebullient Spring collection, championing the same thin-soled, sleek ballerinas and lace button-down cardis this summer in their shop windows
This collection transports one to a Sofia Coppola picture with its button-down and pastel motifs, which is unsurprising given Liang cites the film Marie Antoinette as a key source of inspiration for her designs. Everything from the blend of muted tones, loosely fitted tees to the flat ballet pumps is subdued and grounded. Liang's choice of accessories embrace the model rather than restrain her and have a free-spirited, earthly quality - not a choker, bangle, or high heel in sight. Instead we are brought back down to earth by the tranquillising presence of the sea-shell, and every outfit feels like the gentle motion of a wave. Everything about this feels like a sip of cucumber infused, ice cold still water - salubrious and natural. In the words of Coco Chanel - "simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance".
In what context could I imagine myself wearing each of these?
(Top left to bottom right)
Date night in a Spanish old town. It’s 9pm, the restaurants are coming to life and tapas are calling my name.
Drive by the sea. I’m in a vintage yellow convertible. It’s slightly windy so I have one hand on the wheel and the other on my head to stop my scarf from blowing away.
Sat in the museum gardens on a pink blanket. My camera is strapped across my left shoulder.
The Dinner Party (like a scene from a Richard Curtis movie). I’m hosting for the girls.
